Chiltern Relocation visits the Independent Schools Show and ask the questions that matter

With so many clients asking for our advice and assistance with schooling we took the opportunity to meet staff from some of the best day and boarding schools in the country at the Independent Schools Show. Radley School at Expo

The event in Battersea Park showcased the broad spectrum of educational options available at four entry points: Nursery, Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form.

The idea of the exhibition is to give parents the opportunity to meet some of the biggest names in British education with Headmasters and Headmistresses on hand to talk candidly about the ethos of their schools and what they can offer students and parents alike.

Chiltern Relocation asked the questions that parents want answers to:

  • Are you a selective school?
  • What are your GCSE and A Level results?
  • What % are boys to girls in the Co-Ed schools?
  • In single sex schools is there any interaction with other local single sex schools?
  • Class sizes
  • Sports, facilities, grounds, and specialism
  • Extra curriculum clubs
  • The schools anti-bulling policy

In addition to these questions, we also found that many visitors were keen to know the schools’ stance on pastoral care, for example:

  • Cyber bullying and social media exposure
  • Mobile phone rules
  • Mental as well as physical wellbeing
  • Managing discipline

Many of the schools talked about their ‘holistic approach’ to the children’s education and stressed the need for pastoral care to encompass the mental and physical wellbeing – aware of the social media pressure that young teenagers are under.

Harrow School at Expo

A range of talks were also held during the day covering topics such as ‘the value of leagues tables’ and ‘how to help a summer born child’ providing plenty of food for thought for prospective parents. Brighton College were keen to mention their ‘A*- A’ A ‘Level pass rate but also made it clear that this is only one element of the well-rounded offer that they provide.

Chiltern Relocation were pleased to see local schools exhibiting such as The Beacon and The Royal Masonic School for Girls in addition to discovering more about the more traditional names such as Dulwich College, Harrow, Roedean School, The Oratory, Malborough College and Cheltenham’s Ladies College to name but a few.

We have compiled a document listing all the visiting schools with the following information:

• Location
• Age entry point
• Boys/Girls/Mixed
• Year school established
• Number of pupils
• Price for day/boarding
• A ‘Level results A*- A
