Seduced by a second home?

Many of us dream of owning a holiday home in our favourite part of the world – ready equipped and waiting for whenever you need to get away. Owning your own holiday home means no more searching for villa rentals year after year and no hidden surprises when you get there either!

Whether you are buying for your own family pleasure, or whether you see it as a great investment, here is Chiltern Relocation’s advice on how to find your perfect holiday retreat.

  1. Choose a great location – one that you love and that you want to return to  year after year and also one that will appeal to renters
  2. If you need to fly to your holiday home, check there is a committed service by the airlines and even better that there is a choice of flight provider which will keep travel costs low
  3. Make sure the property has two or three bedrooms so it has plenty of space for you and appeals to the family rental market
  4. Even better make sure there is a storage area where you can lock away your personal possessions which you don’t wish to share with other renters
  5. Try and keep furniture, possessions and décor unfussy so as to attract a wider range of renters
  6. If you want to appeal to a family rental market consider adding the option of cots, stair gates and high chairs as this will really widen your home’s appeal
  7. Consider how you will keep the property well maintained and attractive. Research local trades people who can clean the pool, clean the house and help with linen on change over days. Getting to know a good handy man will also be worth its weight in gold
  8. Get insurance quotes to see how much it will cost (especially as the property will most likely be vacant for part of the year)
  9. Choose a rental company website with care (check their fees) or consider advertising the property yourself. Ownersdirect.co.uk is a popular site for example. Also for the family rental market look at www.totstotravel.co.uk
  10. Compile a thorough manual including places of interest, best beaches etc and also key information about the property such as where to find fuse boxes, thermostats etc and provide a copy of instructions for items such as a gas bbq, oven, heating.

All that’s left is to sit back and relax and enjoy being in your home from home!
