This week has seen a whirlwind of a school and house visits with a couple relocating back to the UK from America. With only two days available to take out from their busy schedule we had a lot to fit in.
The couple were keen to see a number of schools for their daughters as they each had different needs. We started off visiting Pipers Corner School in Little Kingshill for girls aged 4-18. Set in 96 acres of rolling Bucks countryside they could not fail to be impressed by the setting. The school exuded great warmth and the couple were particularly impressed with the new state of the art theatre and café.
Next was Godstowe School in High Wycombe. This is divided into the Pre Prep from 3-7 yrs which accepts boys and girls and the Senior School for girls from 7-13yrs with approximately one third being boarders. The new headmistress has great plans for the school which is soon to start with the rebuilding of the swimming pool. With its proximity to Wycombe Abbey this is very much seen as a potential feeder school.
The last school for today was Heatherton House in Amersham. The couple instantly felt the great warmth of the school and very much liked the free flow between the indoor and outdoor classrooms in the early year’s area. The girls were clearly enjoying the teaching and were engaged and articulate.
Once we had visited the schools it was time to see potential property suggestions that would fit with the school choices. The couple and their family are used to large open plan American houses so finding an equivalent amount of square footage would be a challenge. First up was a period house near the village of Penn with six acres of land, a swimming pool and stunning views. This showcased the space that can be achieved being a little further out of town.
The next property was a contrasting new build in Seer Green with ample square footage and close to local amenities. The trade-off was the garden which was smaller but well designed. The couple were a little taken aback by the new trend for ‘greige’ tones everywhere – clearly a British interior design feature at the moment!
The following day started off with a visit to Chesham Prep School a co-ed school for 3-13 years, again set within rolling countryside. The couple found that the children enjoyed great interaction with the Headmaster who encouraged the children to openly discuss topics such as whether they should have homework as we visited the classes.
Next stop was Berkhamsted Prep School which is co-ed for ages 7-11 years. There is a co-ed Pre Prep for ages 3-7 yrs which is located just outside the town. The Prep School enjoys great facilities with a wide range of extra-curricular options available. Berkhamsted operates a diamond structure whereby the children are co-ed until senior school and then single sex from 11-16 years and then co-ed again in the sixth form.
We crossed the road from the Prep School to the Berkhamsted Girls School where it felt like a university campus with a central quad and impressive dining room overlooking it. Here the facilities were much admired as was the high calibre of teaching.
Our last school visit was St Marys School in Gerrards Cross which is a girl’s school for ages 3-18 years. The school felt small and nurturing and the older children engage and encourage the younger girls. The building was quirky and very British with lovely architectural features which made for a great backdrop to learning.
There was just enough time to fit in one more property viewing before the couple headed to the airport. We were keen to showcase a wide range of options from character house in a semi-rural location to a modern house in a village and our last option was a Grade II listed Georgian double fronted manor house in Little Missenden, used as the Manor House on Vicar of Dibley! The residence boasts 8 bedrooms, 2 annexes and a gym all set in sweeping grounds.
With so much to take in the couple headed back to the USA with many options available to them. Once they narrow down their school choice we look forward to focusing on their property search having showcased examples of what is on offer.
