Meet Roman Gladiators this Half Term in the Chilterns

It’s nearly half term already and this one includes another May Bank Holiday. So why not get out and about in the Chilterns and enjoy some local events on offer.

One of our all-time favourite events on the May Bank Holiday has to be the Gladiator Battles at the Chiltern Open Air Museum in Chalfont St Giles. Visitors are invited to step back in time and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of ancient Rome and cheer for their favourite gladiator and witness their incredible skills and bravery. Marvel at the strategies, strength, and agility displayed by these skilled warriors bit know that the fate of the gladiators lies in your hands. Will you choose to spare a life or seal their fate? With each cheer or jeer, you have the power to decide who will live and who will die.

Gladiators in action on 26 and 27^th May. Many other activities are also on offer during half term.

Rome is also on the map over at Cliveden this half term. This somewhat less fast paced activity trail is themed on snails! Visitors are invited to step back to 1896 when a colony of tiny snails hitched a ride on the Borghese Balustrade, and found themselves transported from Rome to Cliveden. Children need to follow the trail of the snails as they explore the gardens, make friends and have fun and make their own snail rock art to either take home or leave with their snail friends at Cliveden.

This National Trust property has a huge amount to offer in addition to snail trails including its famous maze, gardens and boating trips.

Hughenden Manor is inviting visitors to step back in time and spin the wheel of destiny this half term. With a flick of fate, you’ll be assigned a Hughenden character—a guide to lead you on your journey. Will you become the Victorian statesman Benjamin Disraeli, an ice house boy, or perhaps a woodland bodger? With a newly assigned role, visitors can wander through the gardens, explore the hidden depths of the woodland, and unravel the secrets of Hughenden Manor with tales both mythical and true.

The iconic Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden has plenty of activities lined up for all story loving adventurers. Activities include making clay pots inspired by Danny the Champion of the World and Fantastic Mr Fox. And after all that hands on action visitors can enjoy the fabulous countryside on a guided Roald Dahl walk. There is always a huge amount on offer at this inspiring museum.
