Half Term Activites in the CHILTERNS for all the family
With restrictions easing there are a wide range of adventures available for all ages this half term. Take a look at our pick of the best activities on offer this October.
Buckinghamshire Railway Centre
The railway museum in Quainton, Aylesbury are holding a special trick or treat event on Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 31. Enjoy a tour of the museum and fill in an activity sheet as you go to win a prize. In addition to the trick or treat event Thomas enthusiasts can enjoy A Day Out With Thomas on Saturday 23rd – Monday 25th October (booking necessary).
River and Rowing Museum Henley on Thames
The Museum opened in 1998 to celebrate the river, the international sport of Rowing and the town of Henley on Thames. From 24 – 31 Oct, from 10am – 4pm the museum is inviting visitors of all ages to look to the heavens with fun, quick-fire drawing sessions across half-term. Inspired by the Museum’s new exhibition, Skyscape showcasing 500 years of artists’ fascination with the sky, we hope budding artists will have a go at capturing the fleeting effects of light and weather at the speed of light. Free with General Admission, just drop in.
The Hellfire Caves is like nowhere you have ever been before! Built in the 17th century you travel underground deep into the Chiltern hills for a spooktacular time. Younger visitors will enjoy the Hellfire School of Witchcraft running from 25 -27 Oct from 11-3pm.
Keep the little devils entertained in their Witches’ Workshops with courtyard games, face painting, spooky fancy-dress competitions and more. For braver visitors why not sign up for the Halloween Fright Night from 27-31st Oct. Booking essential.
New for 2021, visitors can enjoy a fantastical immersive safari experience throughout October half-term. Head down Miss Alice’s Drive and encounter magical beasts from myths and fairy tales along the way. The Cryptid Safari trail runs from Sat 23 – 31 October 2021, 10am-5pm (last trail entry 4pm).
The award-winning Chiltern Open Air Museum is hosting a Terrific Tuesday activity day on 26th October where there will be family themed craft and activities on offer. Activities run from 11am – 3.30pm.
This hidden gem boasts a rich history. On the one hand it was the country home to Benjamin Disraeli, Queen Victoria’s favourite Prime Minister. On the other, it was the base for a secret map-making operation during the Second World War. This half term Hughenden are inviting visitors to learn about Fantastical fungi and explore the hidden world of the fascinating fungi kingdom – finding out about the dark and decaying side of nature; the brazen and beautiful, striking and stinking of the mushroom world! £1 per child. From 16 Oct – 7 Nov.
If the idea of booking ahead is not for you then why not get out and enjoy one of the stunning autumnal walks on our doorstep and enjoy a slice of history at the same time. Many of our clients choose to move to the area – also known as the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to get greater access to green space. If you head over to Marlow, you can enjoy a half term walk through WW1 Training Trenches.
In the quintessentially British village of Bovingdon Green near Marlow you will find Pullingshill Wood where the troops undertook trench digging in preparation for service at the Western Front. The site at Pullingshill Wood contains the best and most complete set of training trenches left in the UK. There are about 1400m of trenches dug about 2m deep and 2m wide, by troops from the Grenadier Guards and local people.
Many training camps were set up in 1914 and 1915 to give the new recruits good skills and morale before setting off. Many features such as machine-gun posts, fire-bays and forward trenches have been identified at Pullingshill Wood. The trenches are in good condition and their pattern can be followed today despite natural infilling through soil and leaf litter build-up.
