Half term is fast approaching and with lots of time to fill – some lucky students have a two week half term – why not try one of the many fabulous activities available in Bucks this October.

EXPLORE:
National Trust property Waddesdon Manor always has plenty to please everyone. If you haven’t visited Waddesdon’s giant three-tiered ceramic wedding cake yet, this month is your last chance as it closes Thu 26 Oct. Don’t miss the opportunity to climb the 12m high sculpture for stunning views across the gardens and grounds. Half term will also be host to the spooky trick or treat skeleton trail.
Black Park country park offers a host of activities for all ages – from Go Ape to Nets Kingdom and Segways. Or just enjoy the 500 acres of woodland and heathland and well-maintained paths. There are plenty of open spaces that loop around the lake that are perfect for frisbee and picnics and the café overlooking the lake is perfect pop for a well-earned break. This half term brave explorers are invited to join the Terror Trail.
VISIT A MUSEUM:
The incredible code WW2 code cracking museum Bletchley Park has a new exhibition called The Intelligence Factory. Suitable for older kids, it boasts lots of interactive elements, including a naval plotting room, WW2 costumes, personal stories and even plotting traffic analysis.
Discover Bucks Museum in Aylesbury has some amazing new galleries in which you can learn about Buckinghamshire from prehistoric times to the present day. See a 3000-year-old Bronze Age sword, the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon coins ever found, a mammoth’s leg bone and much more. Children will also love the Roald Dahl Gallery where they can be hands-on with their favourite characters from his world-famous books. The museum will also be hosting a fun-filled week of arts and crafts, topped off with a spooky Halloween day on 28 October.
Amersham Museum is in a charming 15th century house on the High Street in Old Amersham. The museum is packed with hands-on activities, discovery boxes with handling objects and multimedia tablets so children can explore Amersham through the ages. The museum has plenty of crafts on offer and a spooky themed treasure hunt for half term. After all the action there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants nearby to sit, eat, drink and discuss the discoveries!
ANIMAL LOVE:
Horsewyse, the equine therapy centre and riding stables in Long Crendon, is holding Pony Days on Oct 25th and 29th where children can learn all about looking after ponies, catching them in the field, feeding them, grooming and cleaning tack.
Kew Little Pigs farm in Amersham is offering Pig Keeper Days on Oct 25th – 27th this half term. A unique experience where kids (aged 9 – 16yrs) can learn all about looking after the adorable miniature pigs, play with them and make new friends. Be prepared for muddy hands and clothes!
SEE A SHOW:
If you like magic – and in particular card tricks then magic fans of all ages will love The Greatest Magician at Wycombe Swan (Thu 19 Oct). Hosted by the BBC’s Trickster, James Phelan, the show swaps out simple tricks for super cool illusions and audience participation.
A must-see experience for dinosaur lovers is also visiting the Wycombe Swan this half term. Taking it back a couple millennia, Jurassic Earth returns to Wycombe Swan on Wed 25 Oct with life-sized dinosaur and interactive activities.
HALLOWEEN HAUNTS:
Whizz over to National Trust’s Hughenden Manor and take part in their Woodworking: Craft Your Own Magical Wand (Mon 23 Oct & Wed 25 Oct). Wannabe witches and wizards can enjoy some bespoke wand crafting with the help of skilled woodworkers.
Roll up to Chiltern Open Air Museum for a flaming hot (literally, there’s fire breathers) evening of arts and crafts, creepy woodland walks, marshmallow toasting, and seasonal décor galore. All the action is on Fri 27 Oct.
As part of Odds Farm’s Halloween Festival, little ones can use a mini wheelbarrow to pick pumpkins from the cute Oddlotment. There’ll also be carving workshops and a themed arts and crafts around the farm. Book tickets ahead of arrival.
