Why Reading Is Winning Over Corporates, Commuters and Families Alike

Why Reading is firmly on the map with corporates and families

Since opening in May 2022, the Elizabeth Line has become the UK’s busiest rail service with over 500 million journeys recorded.

It is nearly four years since the Elizabeth Line headed west to Reading and since then, commuters have flocked to use the UK’s most popular new service. The iconic purple tube line links Reading with direct, high-frequency connections through central London and beyond in under an hour. Residents can now travel directly to key destinations such as Paddington, Bond Street, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf without changing trains.

Today the BBC has highlighted ‘How the Elizabeth Line has changed Reading’ by becoming a ‘major economic player’. This follows the rise in popularity of the town in attracting accounting powerhouse PwC and PepsiCo who have both relocated here. As a result, the town is seeing a boost in housing demand with an increasing number of luxury housing developments under construction.

Since the launch of the Elizabeth line, Reading has quietly strengthened its position as one of the South East’s most attractive property markets and it’s a shift that’s already delivering tangible benefits for residents, investors and businesses alike. This level of connectivity places Reading firmly within London’s extended commuter belt, while still retaining its identity as a major regional centre in its own right.

What type of housing is available in Reading for young professionals and families?

If you are looking to relocate to Reading the housing options are plentiful. Young professionals are spoilt for choice with the new Reading Riverworks community of over two hundred one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments located in a prime riverside position.

For families looking for something special, Chiltern Relocation always recommends Caversham, to the north of central Reading. Nestled along the banks of the Thames, Caversham offers a unique blend of scenic beauty, bustling local markets and a welcoming atmosphere. Housing options here boast a wide variety of Victorian homes full of character features including high ceilings, ornate fireplaces, stained glass windows and the eye-catching wrap around porches.

Another popular choice is Sonning, a few miles east of Reading. The riverside village was once described as “the most fairy-like little nook on the whole river” by esteemed English writer, Jerome K. Jerome in his classic novel Three Men in a Boat. Sonning’s genteel charm has continued to attract those looking to spend some time away from city life but with the convenience of Reading on the doorstep.

The village was also recently voted ‘10 best places to live in Berkshire for 2025’ by the lifestyle website Muddy Stilettos. Housing choices here include cottage style homes to sizeable family houses with plenty of period properties oozing charm and sizeable gardens.

What Schooling options are available in Reading

For families looking to relocate to the area, the schooling options are plentiful, thanks to excellent state and private primary and secondary schooling options, both within Reading and in neighbouring areas. Private secondary schools of note include The Abbey School for girls which won Independent Girls’ School of the Year in 2024. Queen Anne’s School is a leading independent and boarding school for girls in Caversham, and in Sonning, close to The Thames, Reading Blue Coat School is a popular co-ed choice that excels in rowing.

Which other towns on the Elizabeth Line are popular with commuters?

With journey times of just 17 minutes from Slough to Paddington it is no surprise that we are seeing increased interest in other popular commuter towns along the Elizabeth Line. These include Twyford, Maidenhead, Taplow, Burnham, Slough, Langley and Iver. Many of these towns have direct access to the Thames which makes them popular with boating enthusiasts in addition to kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders. Many residents also simply enjoy walking along the riverside to soak up the relaxed atmosphere. Visit our recent blog here which dives a little deeper into each location.

Why Reading gets our vote

Whilst the Elizabeth line was primarily designed to improve east-west travel across London, Reading has emerged as one of its major beneficiaries outside the capital. In addition to an easy commute, plentiful housing options and great schooling, Reading has a vibrant social and leisure scene. The Oracle Shopping Centre provides a wide range of retail options, while the Rivermead Leisure Complex offers extensive sports facilities. The Madejski Stadium hosts Reading FC and London Irish Rugby Union Club fixtures. Meanwhile, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy riverside walks, boating on the Thames and the green spaces around Caversham and the surrounding countryside.

For buyers, renters, and investors alike, the Elizabeth line has helped future-proof Reading’s property market — making it not just better connected, more desirable but better placed for long-term growth.
